The use of LED lights for plant growth research is a relatively new concept and one which is producing much interest. Whilst their use is currently rare, an increasing amount of research is being carried out to assess the benefits of this lighting method.
Research has already shown that LED lights have significant advantages over traditional lighting methods.
These include:

Colour
LED lights can be manufactured to replicate the colours that are of most benefit to plant growth. For example, the blue part of the light spectrum encourages vegetative plant growth, whilst the red part of the spectrum is ideal for encouraging flowering plants.

Heat
LED lights emit considerably less heat than other sources of lighting and requires no ballasts to operate.

Economy
Whilst undoubtedly being more expensive than traditional light sources, LED lighting requires far less energy to produce the necessary light levels. A three watt LED produces a similar energy output to a 45 watt incandescent bulb. LED lighting also lasts longer, often having an operating life of some 50,000 hours.
